Why do the people that stay out of trouble with the law have to pay for a college degree, possibly work 2 jobs to survive, and then come out of college with the degree along with $50,000 in debt. Meanwhile, the guy who is doing 5-10 years in a state pen. can recieve a degree in something like criminal justice for free? Us law abiding, tax paying citizens give our hard earned money to the government so they can give free degrees to people who have commited serious crimes. Am I the only one who sees a problem with this?

I don't know. I guess it depends on the felon. I've known a few guys over the years that are convicted felons, and they turned out okay. I think in many cases a guy either makes a terrible mistake in the impetuousness of youth or is just in the wrong place at the wrong time. If we're talking about repeat offenders then that might be a different story. But I believe everyone deserves a second chance, and for a person getting out of prison having a real desire to try to start over is hard enough. At least with a college degree the system is trying to give them some hope and a hand up when they return to society.

I agree completely with a criminal getting a degree to try and start his life over. A free degree though? Why not charge them 5,000 a semester like any other college student might have to pay? Why because of them making a mistake does the government feel they need to give them something?

I don't agree with it either, but I think it's because it's hard to get a job when you are fresh out of jail, I mean, s***, it's hard to get a job even when you DIDN'T go to jail. Just try to imagine the difficulty of getting a job for someone who made a mistake and really wants to turn their life around?
On the other hand, there will always be people abusing this offer.

I could see that. I suppose they could treat it like a student loan. So when they get a job in the field they've chosen they can start paying it back.

Well if its hard for everyone to get a job why not give it to the person who has done right their whole life? Why not give them the free degree? I mean I know there are scholarships and what not but all the students have to compete for them. Alot are rejected, but they continue to try hard to achieve their goals it isn't just given to them because we feel bad. Just kind of f***ed that criminals get handed things. I understand you've paid your dues and you shouldnt be judged but you damn sure dont deserve something that isn't given to everyone.

Thats too true. Like when a job application specifically states {Having a prior conviction does not automatically disclude you from this position), it really means to say (Go away you filthy animal).

Though im happy enough to have a bonus point in the application process any way I can and could very well be competing with a felon for the job.

The felon got his degree for free because he held up grandma when he was 20 to get a hit of smack but because he wants to change he is now competing with you.....feels good dont it.
