I don't know what exactly has changed-- really just our perceptions I suppose. I mean, just because these things never have happened before, it doesn't make anything different now that they have.

It was horrible too. That was six hours we sat here, waiting, wondering with no word. Is anybody going to get sent in? Who's it going to be? How bad is it going to be? How well are we going to know them? How's this going to end? My brother-in-law is part of the swat team; I cannot convey my relief that he was out of town for this.

This was heart-breaking though. He was such a good guy. Everyone else just seemed to be in shock too. It was enough to make you cry. And now everything feels so different. I always thought the phrase "it rocked the community" was meaningless, but in reality it describes something profound. The lingering melancholy it leaves behind in everyone is intense. I'm just so sad over this, and shocked. These are not the kind of things that ever happen in our little world here.

Sad story. I feel for his poor wife too. So young to lose a husband.

It's always the good people, and never the scum bags.

It does seem that way, doesn't it? And there is no "always" in this situation either. We haven't lost a cop in the line of duty for 50 years here. A cop hasn't been shot in the line of duty since the 1898.

This situation is so alien here.

It doesn't seem to be as rocking to those outside of the city, but this is the officer, Craig Birkholz, who lost his life yesterday.
