This article suggests that US Treasury Secretary Geithner thinks the Chinese currency is over valued by as much as 40%. In a nutshell he's saying that imports from China should be 40% more expensive.

I can't help feeling that there is a purely political angle to his statement.

Is that because 40% of the American dollar is held by China (if not more) Sure sanction them and see how fast China reacts .. "Pay your debt to us or declare bankruptcy."

I remember when! could have pegged the yuan to the dollar yars ago but continued to delay that decision. Nixon started the action and the Bushes continued to delay revaoueing it. Now? we pay the piper.

The chinese are manipulating their currency to make their exports cheap to the rest of the world. What's the political angle you see exactly?
